This week we see arguably the biggest change to NZ racing in the 11+ years we have been running the Formpro Ratings site.

Up to this point, all NZ racing has been on grass tracks.  That changes on Wednesday with the first racing meeting in NZ on a synthetic track.

Ratings are up for the meeting as you may have seen.

Two Cambridge Tracks

You will notice the ratings have no value for best rating on the track.  While the racing is at Cambridge, from a statistical perspective we will differentiate races at Cambridge (grass) and Cambridge Synthetic.  As far as we know, we won’t have mixed meetings (as they do for example in Hong Kong) but our data systems will be able to cope.

Given the substantial change, it will be interesting to see if there are any patterns that emerge on the new track – either in run positions or draw.  That is in addition to the likelihood that some horses will like the synthetic surface and others won’t.

Regardless, we should have an advantage over the average punter as we can filter results by surface and identify any trends.

We’ll put together some analysis after the first meeting and post here and on the Formpro site.

Any questions or comments, let Neil know.
