Two weeks back our bet of the day won, while last week our lay of the day must have read this site as it barely featured in the run. Clever dog!!
Bet of the Day – R11 Kirham Coby (1)
Last week we made an odds on shot our bet of the day and the bookies laughed all the way to their Jackson St cafe of choice. Not this week!
I’ve gone for a value runner who’ paying excellent value almost $10 to win and a $2.40 fixed to place.
He downgrades, has drawn box 1 and just like Santa, he has an outstanding record in red – 7 wins from 12 starts. There isn’t a lot of box speed on his immediate outside although the favourite Bigtime Eve in box four does look like the early pace maker.
Coby has run two of the fastest three times all courses and distances. While his record at Palmerston North is not the greatest, he hasn’t been blessed with the best box draws in Turbine Towm so the improved draw should be a real benefit. And while his form doesn’t look the greatest, his closing sectional last start was in the top ten for the day.
And did I mention the great value at 9.50FF? Or play the place odds in a multi. Rated price $3, currently $9.50FF.
They don’t always work out like that but after KC jumped, it was all Sunshine after that! Especially given Eve was expected to lead – once Kirby got a sniff he hung on gamely. A great day at the office … and did we say great value at $9.50FF?
Lay of the Day – Race 8 Bigtime Wild (8)
Last week, it was easy in retrospect to find a dog not to back … just look for a dog paying less than $2 to win!
This week, it’s a lot tougher to find an obvious lay of the day – the bookies and the fields have seen to that.
While not particularly short, Bigtime Wild is the bookies’ favourite in race 8 but it does look an open race. The negatives:
- yet to win from outside box 4
- yet to win in four starts course and distance
- just 2 of the best 20 times course and distance over the last 90 days
It is a very even field with the Predictor having 7 runners spread over just 18 points. At the other extreme, Bigtime Sam (2) in too looks good value especially with the dog in the red likely to be very slow out.
In the end that was easy and while the Ratings didn’t manage to through up the winner, it highlighted what an even race it was with a $27 winner. We got a bit of a run with Bigtime Sam until he got checked … which was more than anyone who backed Bigtime Wild would have got!
